This Bowie student is passionate about STEM. Now, she’s part of a program aimed at getting more girls in the field

A Bowie, Maryland, highschool senior began a membership on sharing her love of STEM. Now, she’s been picked for a program aimed at getting more girls concerned in STEM.

Ever since she was in elementary college, Anike Akinfolarin has liked STEM, or science, know-how, engineering and math and couldn’t get sufficient of it. So a lot in order that final fall, she began a group referred to as “STEM Sisters” aimed at sharing her ardour for STEM with different girls like her.

Now, she’s part of a cohort that may assist her do this.

Akinfolarin, a senior at Charles Herbert Flowers High School in Springdale, is Maryland’s consultant with the STEM Next Opportunity Fund’s Million Girls Moonshot.

The “flight crew” has 51 reps — one from every state and the District — which assist foster and encourage college students like Akinfolarin to share their ardour of the field with different girls.

The nationwide initiative’s mission is to shut the hole in girls in STEM-focused roles and supply entry to hundreds of thousands of younger people who find themselves in the field via after-school and summer season applications with the aim of participating a million more girls in STEM by 2025, based on their web site.

“This permits the cohort of girls … to come back collectively and principally discuss about our passions for STEM and the way we are going to change the group [with] the passions that all of us have and the way we are going to interact a million girls into STEM,” mentioned Akinfolarin.

STEM Sisters, a web based membership she began in the fall, is her first step at doing simply that.

Akinfolarin will graduate later this yr and plans to check biotechnology in faculty, although she hasn’t finalized the place she’ll attend. Eventually, she desires to work for Johnson & Johnson in addition to the Department of Defense after graduating faculty.
