(CNN) — The Naval Criminal Investigative Services is investigating an incident allegedly involving two US Marines based mostly in Washington, DC, based on a assertion from Marine Barracks Washington, following reviews of racial slurs written in a University of Maryland resident hall.

The two Marines — Lance Cpls. Sergio Delgado, 21, and Hayden Pritchard, 22 — had been charged earlier this month in connection with a “hate bias incident” that occurred on the college in April, based on a launch from the University of Maryland Police Department. NCIS is conducting the investigation alongside UMPD.

It was not instantly clear whether or not Delgado and Pritchard have authorized illustration.

On the morning of April 29, 2023, officers responded after “racial slurs towards the Black group” had been discovered inside a residence hall, based on the UMPD launch. The officers responded once more after “extra racial slurs” had been discovered contained in the residence hall a few hours later. Delgado was charged with one rely of trespassing, whereas Pritchard was charged with trespassing and a rely of race/non secular property harm, based on the UMPD launch.

Delgado and Pritchard had been “recognized and charged by the University of Maryland Police Department” on February 8 “after the command was notified by investigating officers in January 2024, in connection with an incident that occurred inside La Plata Hall,” based on the Marine Barracks Washington assertion.

UMPD declined to touch upon why the 2 males had been on campus or how they acquired entry to the constructing.

Mike Lurie, a spokesperson for the University System of Maryland, stated the 2 males charged weren’t enrolled in any USMD college.

The Marine Barracks Washington assertion stated the costs towards Delgado and Pritchard “mirror conduct that’s inconsistent with the exceedingly excessive requirements the United States Marine Corps expects of its Marines.”

“Further, such conduct wouldn’t mirror the excellent conduct and professionalism displayed by the overwhelming majority of Marine Barracks Washington’s Marines and Sailors,” the assertion stated. “Should these costs be substantiated, Lance Cpl. Delgado and Lance Cpl. Pritchard might be held absolutely accountable for his or her actions.”

Both Delgado and Pritchard enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 2022 and reported to Marine Barracks Washington in December that 12 months after finishing recruit coaching and the School of Infantry – West at Camp Pendleton, California.
