Newly launched body cam video shows a Prince George’s County police officer capturing a man inside seconds of entering an apartment in Suitland, Maryland.
The capturing occurred Feb. 1 within the 5100 block of Suitland Road. The officer who fired his weapon was responding to a 911 name a few reported break-in simply earlier than 5:30 p.m.
The time stamp on the video shows Officer Braxton Shelton fired his weapon lower than 10 seconds after entering the unit within the Windham Creek Apartments.
The video shows Shelton instantly seeing 31-year-old Melvin Jay close to the kitchen upon entering the apartment. Shelton ordered Jay to point out him his palms, then Jay is seen transferring into the kitchen towards a sink.
One gun shot is fired by the officer and Jay falls to the ground. Later, the video captures the officer’s rationalization of what occurred.
“He ran in right here. He ran from me, went in right here and grabbed one thing,” the officer is heard saying within the video.
Other police within the room rendered help to Jay. In recorded remarks included with the video, Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz, stated officers discovered two weapons contained in the apartment.
“In addition to the gun present in Mister Jay’s jacket pocket, a second gun was positioned within the kitchen sink, subsequent to the place the capturing occurred.”
In the video, officers are proven recovering the gun in Jay’s pocket. The Maryland Attorney General’s Office remains to be investigating. Shelton stays on administrative go away from the Prince George’s County Police Department.
