Looking for a monumentally nice time? There’s potential at the Kinetic Sculpture Race this Saturday, May 4.
The 24th Kinetic Sculpture Race, offered by the American Visionary Art Museum (AVAM), will happen rain or shine. As of publication, there are 24 registered groups, with members ranging in age from youngsters to octogenarians.
The race’s autos, created by every crew by scratch, will match the theme of the race: “Monuments and Masterpieces.” The autos’ designs and theme songs will echo this theme as they journey by 15 miles of downtown Baltimore streets.
The kinetic sculptures will even navigate mud and sand pits at Patterson Park, and the Inner Harbor.
Sculptures should be human-powered, although help of “the pure energy of water, wind, solar, and gravity and pleasant extraterrestrials” is allowed. A “Homemade Sock Creature” (HSC) should even be current on the sculpture for the complete race. Each sculpture could have up to at least one human Barnacle. Harassment of officers will not be allowed, although the code of conduct makes plain that “If issues will not be going your means, take it personally—they’re selecting on you.” A full checklist of guidelines is out there on AVAM’s web site.
Prizes awarded embrace ACE, Best Pit Crew, People’s Choice, Sock Creature of the Universe, and Spirit of the Glorious Founder. Finally, for the reason that virtues of mediocrity are by no means sung loudly sufficient, the best honor of the race is the Grand Mediocre Champion, awarded to the crew that finishes precisely in the course of the pack.
AVAM recommends protecting an eye fixed out for the next contenders:
- Mountain Club of Maryland will debut their first car, “Happy Trails.”
- Conestoga Creamers claims they are going to have ice cream churning capability with their wheels and can ship frosty treats.
- The Battle of Ball’s Deep guarantees an enormous Dung Beetle’s Dungball—full with “odors.”
- Five Baltimore-area faculty groups will compete, together with these from The Jemicy School, St. Paul’s School for Boys and The Park School of Baltimore.
- A crew from Duke University will compete for the primary time, represented by college students from their mechanical engineering division.

- 8 a.m. : Safety Check & Brake Test
- 9:30 a.m.: Opening Ceremonies at AVAM
- 10 a.m.: LeMans Start of Race on Covington Street
- 11:15-1 p.m.: Water Entry at Canton Waterfront
- 1:15-3:30 p.m.: Sand & Mud Obstacles in Patterson Park
- 4 p.m.: Finish Line at AVAM
- 6-7 p.m.: Awards Ceremony at AVAM
