BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles tied a major league record with 5 sacrifice flies of their 16-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays in the opener of Tuesday’s doubleheader.
Baltimore instantly loaded the bases with no person out in the first, and Tyler O’Neill and Cedric Mullins hit sac flies that inning. Then Ramón Urías and Mullins added a few extra in the third. Jackson Holliday’s flyout to left in the eighth tied the record and introduced house Baltimore’s remaining run of the sport.
“They got here out, they competed. Those are the at-bats that profitable groups have proper there when you’ve that many,” interim supervisor Tony Mansolino mentioned. “We’ve talked about all of it 12 months. That’s a runner in scoring place, these are actually optimistic at-bats proper there. So simply happy with the guys. That’s profitable baseball.”
The sacrifice fly turned official in 1954, and the Orioles have been the fourth crew since then to supply 5 of them in a sport. Seattle did it in 2008 and 1988, and Colorado pulled it off in 2006.
To hit that many sacrifice flies, you want males on third with fewer than two outs. The Orioles loaded the bases with no person out in the first and third, had males on second and third with one out in the fifth, then had runners on first and third with one out in the sixth and eighth.
Baltimore had seven plate appearances with a person on third and fewer than two outs. The Orioles went 1 for two in these possibilities, since sacrifice flies do not rely as at-bats.
Baltimore additionally homered 4 instances in the sport.
